Track and Field Scoring

Scoring a track and field meet is a bit more complicated than Scoring a Cross Country Meet.

The first major difference is that in track and field meets, the team with the highest score wins. The second major difference is that since there are more events, the way that points are assigned is completely different:

  • Relay events (4×800, 4×100, and 4×400)
    • 1st place gives the team 5 points,
    • Anything else gives the team no points
  • Other events
    • 1st place gives the team 10 points,
    • 2nd place gives the team 8 points,
    • 3rd place gives the team 6 points,
    • 4th place gives the team 5 points,
    • 5th place gives the team 4 points,
    • 6th place gives the team 3 points,
    • 7th place gives the team 2 points,
    • 8th place gives the team 1 point,
  • Tiebreakers
    • Throwing events (shot put, discus, and javelin) are broken by the 2nd best throw,
    • Long jump and triple jump are broken by the 2nd best jump,
    • High jump and Pole Vault are broken by the number of misses

(This was derived heavily from Lexington High School’s Scoring a Track Meet)
