Coach George Munro

Head Track & Field Coach

Background:

I was born in Philadelphia and attended Lincoln HS in the northeast before moving to Bucks County and graduated from Neshaminy Langhorne HS in 1976.  I attended Bucks County Community College in the late 70s, majoring in Engineering and Biology, but graduated from West Chester U. In ‘94 with a teaching degree. I have worked in an injection molding factory, a hardware store, and the Limited clothing store.  I was the operations manager at Lehigh River Rafting (best and hardest job ever), have been a school bus driver, a bread delivery driver (Maier’s Bakery), and worked for a general contractor where I learned to renovate homes.  My most rewarding role has been that of a husband to Zita (28 years) and father to Daniel 21 and Aurora 17.  Our family became Delco residents in 2018, but I have been a teacher and coach here since 1990.

Athletics:

I competed in cross country and track and field in high school and college.  The high hurdles was my specialty in high school, steeplechase in college, but began exploring other events shortly thereafter.  I completed my first marathon in 1978 followed by 34 more, including 11 in ‘82, 4 that November.  I have completed 50 triathlons winning 3 of them, getting 2nd in 5 others, with a highlight 18th place finish at the 1980 Ironman in Honolulu.  I have also completed 8 decathlons, open water swims in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico, ridden a bike to Baltimore, Boston (3 days), Atlanta (5 days), as well as a 3 week tour of New Mexico (1300 awesome miles).  I also played two seasons of field hockey for the Rye N.Y. field hockey club.

Coaching:

I began coaching track in 1984.  This will be my 42nd consecutive season of spring track, and 113th season overall in track, field hockey, cross country, and football, at Lower Moreland, Weatherly, Crestwood, Penncrest, and Strath Haven high schools.  The track teams I headed at Penncrest had a 256-35-3 record over 33 springs winning 12 championships and finishing 2nd 9 times. In three seasons as the Weatherly XC coach we had the District 11 individual champion once and two division championships in the Schuylkill League.  The ‘88 and ‘89 teams were inducted into the Weatherly athletic hall of fame in 2019.  The Penncrest XC teams finished in the top ten at the state championships in ‘13 (9th), ‘19 (5th), and ‘22 (3rd).
